Welcome back, dear readers!
One more Friday, we’re back to offer you an exhaustive summary of the latest events in the Spanish video game industry. This time, in a special post-Gamescom 2024 edition — because, in case you missed it, Games From Spain spent a week in Cologne promoting our talented companies.
From developers to publishers, going through all types of outsourcing services, accelerators and education centers, some 60 businesses attended the German fair under our representation in search of funding, international visibility for their projects, and new opportunities. That’s three times more companies than in 2022, and confirms the growing influence that Games From Spain is gaining on the international scene as a seal of quality and curation.
Kölnmesse is a huge conference center with very differentiated areas. Games From Spain was present both in the entertainment area in Hall 10 and in the business area in Hall 4, which was open to trade visitors from Wednesday 21 to Friday 23. This professional zone hosted 18 developers, 9 publishers and 15 service providers and institutions, while Hall 10 featured 22 indie games represented by their developers and publishers (Selecta Play, Meridiem, Entalto, Artax) plus an exclusive booth for OWO, a cutting-edge tech company producing haptic jackets!
For the first time ever, our space at Hall 10.2 had a stage where various activities were held, from panel discussions on current topics (Making A Folk Game Marketable, Cozy Con) to live presentations (GodsTV: Playing With The Big Boys, Project ST: Live Demo) and exciting tournaments (Two Strikes, Wild Rumble). Some of these featured well-known content creators such as 2DKiri, invited by The Game Kitchen/Billete Cohete, and Rocket Beans TV, whose show across the Games From Spain booth gathered over 7,000 people on Twitch.
Our content took up the duration of the fair and was livestreamed on YouTube. Of course, you can find all the activities recorded right there! If you want to support our work, please subscribe to the Games From Spain channel, watch our videos and share those you enjoy the most.
Last week we already told you about a couple of surprise announcements that took place during the Future Games Show and left us on the edge of our seats. As we look back on the best of Gamescom, why not mention them again?
First, we could watch a new trailer for Retrieval, the PlayStation award-winning sci-fi horror game by 333 Studios. Retrieval takes players to a distant planet called Ryhalian, where they will assume the role of commander and researcher Hana Loshe. Stranded in a hostile place she knows nothing about, Loshe will have to find a way out while facing hostile beings and struggling to survive. It’d be the perfect choice for those who enjoyed Returnal, The Calisto Protocol and the ol’ good Pray.
Second, a new project by The Game Kitchen was revealed! Published by Tripwire Interactive (Chivalry, Killing Floor, Maneater), The Stone of Madness is a real-time tactical game set in an 18th-century Spanish monastery. At a time when mental illness was treated in Church-run institutions, five patients face their traumas and phobias to unveil the secrets of this antique madhouse and, finally, find a way to escape. We hope to learn more on Agnes, Leonora, Eduardo, Amelia, and Alfredo in the months leading to the game release!
The Stone of Madness was originally announced in 2020 by Teku Studios and Merge Games.
That said, we must raise a guilty hand because we missed another release last week — you know it’s hard to keep up with everything during the trade fair season! Scarecrow Studio surprised us on August 22 with the release of 3 Minutes to Midnight, a long-expected graphic adventure featuring two brave women who must stop a supernatural conspiracy. Don’t miss its striking HD cartoon art and acid jokes if you loved Day of the Tentacle and Monkey Island.
The metroidvania game Altered Alma is getting ready for its Kickstarter campaign, which kicks off next week. It will start on September 3 and run until early October. At the same time, 2Awesome Studio and Critical Reflex will release the first public demo of the game, which was officially announced at the 2023 PC Gaming Show.
Altered Alma tells the story of Jackelyne, a mercenary trapped in a neon-lit cyberpunk city with many secrets under its surface. Pursued by her own kind, Jack will have to assemble a crew for his ship in record time. This dangerous mission will lead her to uncover uncomfortable truths about her “family” and the social order established over the centuries.
This was the second year we’ve seen it at Gamescom, and the change between versions is remarkable. Animations are more fluid, environments gained visual depth and there are new challenges across the levels that enrich gameplay. Also, we love the new character sprites for Jackelyne and her friends!
Now we’re done with the Gamescom updates, let’s talk about what happened in the last few days!
A new Nintendo Direct revealed that NEVA, the new game by Nomada Studio, will arrive on October 15 to PC and consoles! Prepare to live a unique journey on family love, boundaries and trust through the story of Alba, a young woman who will raise a curious wolf cub in a world at the verge of destruction. From our experience with Gris, we can only advise you to get your box of tissues ready and keep your pets close by for a cuddle. You’re warned!
The boss rush game Nimbusfall, by Godzi Pixel and Devilish Games, will arrive on Steam and Nintendo Switch in two weeks!
This September 13, step into the shoes of the last survivor of a race decimated by The Moon, now seeking to settle the score with the culprit of its extinction. Test your skills across 25 challenging levels as you unveil the truth of your tragedy.
It’s uncertain if a certain trend related to supermarket flirting played a part in this, but Patrones y Escondites recently announced that Pineapple: A Bittersweet Revenge is coming to Steam on September 26th! This classic adventure was inspired by a Reddit post about a kid who traced an extreme plan to prank his high-school bully. In the game, players will help this boy place pineapples in the most unexpected places to give Laura Smith, aka The Witch, a taste of her own medicine.
Pineapple: A Bittersweet Revenge was playable at our booth in Hall 10.2 at Gamescom. Their stand was one of the most curious we have ever had, as they brought a bunch of pineapples to place on a side display!
Mika and the Witch’s Mountain, released on August 21, is ready to go on Steam Deck. How many of you have already enjoyed this charming adventure inspired by Kiki’s Delivery Service?
And that’s all for today, folks! Those who’re subscribed to our newsletter, stay tuned — soon, you’ll receive our monthly update in your inbox, with a brief summary of everything that has happened this August in the Spanish video game industry.
