Meet Odders Lab, the Seville-based studio that developed Meta’s Best App of the Year 2022! Founded in 2019, Odders is one of Spain’s top XR-focused studios. In just five years, the studio has grown from 6 to 55 employees and managed to release four titles, two original IPs (Oh Shape, Chess Club) and two along the fitness brand Les Mills (Les Mills BodyCombat, Les Mills Dance). Undoubtedly, the passion for fitness and health are in their DNA!
Odders Lab’s founders first met at a startup called Oblumi, created in 2014. They started to tinker with virtual reality, which was a new and promising technology at that time. Thus, Odders was founded as a studio that wanted to mix virtual reality with movement, which the studio predicted would play a significant role in this new technology.
OhShape, released in 2020, just before the pandemic entered our lives, was Odders’ first release. This rhythm game that challenges players to dodge obstacles and strike fun poses was even a launch title for the Pico 4. But what was more important was that it sent a message to the world: there was a new studio with fun, innovative ideas for a new platform.
Virtual reality allows game makers to put players in unimaginable places. What about putting players on an unconventional chessboard? Chess Club, released in 2021, is an immersive chess simulator that uses avatars, voice commands, and hand-tracking gestures to make a chess match feel as real as if you were the Queen herself slashing through hordes of pawns.
Odders Lab joined forces with the fitness brand Les Mills to release their next two games. Les Mills BodyCombat, released in 2022, is the studio’s biggest hit until today. Meta featured the game as the best app released for its XR devices in 2022 thanks to its blend of top-notch graphics and the official Les Mills license, which allowed the studio to also build a complete home fitness app. The game is still a best-seller nowadays, and it has recently released its first premium DLC, called Power Strike.
After putting people to exercise, Odders and Les Mills wanted them to dance. Les Mills XR Dance, released in 2023, was the second cooperation between the studio and the fitness brand. The game brings the lively and vibrant atmosphere of a gym Les Mills Dance fitness class to Meta Quest 3 headsets, with more than 40 songs from the Monstercat music label.
That brings us to present day. Recently, Odders Lab released a long awaited update for Chess Club, which adds mixed reality. This will allow for an even more satisfying experience by blending the real and virtual worlds. It was launched on July 20st, commemorating the International Chess Day.
